UCM is bigger than me.

We need your help!

Service learning is a method of experiential learning that gets you out of your
comfort zone, offers a mutual benefit and allows you to reflect upon your experiences.

    Volunteering With Kids

There are two programs under this umbrella. Saturday's Kids: Students volunteer at the Kalamazoo Boys and Girls Club seven times each semester. They prepare lunch for 80 kids, provide programming, organize field trips and focus on spending time having fun with the kids.

Outrageous Pages: Students volunteer at Peace House each Thursday afternoon, and provide homework help, literacy work, a snack and an activity.

    Alternative Spring Break

Students travel to distant cities during spring break to do something more than soak up the rays on a beach. They sleep on the floors of churches, study the urban issues specific to where they are, volunteer in a variety of agencies and reflect, reflect, reflect on what it all means.

Their eyes are opened, and they remain open once the students return to Kalamazoo.

    Urban Plunge

Students travel to Chicago and Detroit each semester to spend the weekend learning about poverty and all of the related issues, and then, spend time serving in agencies that respond to these needs. The students are expected to think deeply and reflect upon how the issues of urban poverty effect us all.

    Habitat for Humanity

Every Saturday, up to 15 students volunteer doing a variety of construction work for Habitat, with the goal being the elimination of substandard housing. They work 8 hour shifts with Habitat home owners, staff and other volunteers.

    Spirituality

There are two programs under this umbrella. Students gather over pizza for conversation about theological topics of all kinds. The focus is on making faith relevant.

Here's what our UCM alumni have to say

It made me realize that no matter what I do, I want to include service learning/volunteer in it. It also forced me to question everything and ask why things are the way they are.

Because of UCM, I realized that my life would be one of service and advocacy. I felt called to tell other about the injustices I had seen. I would literally not be doing what I am today if I did not join UCM in college. I would not even live where I do.

It taught me to be selfless and humble. It helped me become a reflective participant through life's adventures.
